Beaches And Coves

Beaches And Coves in Vela Luka Bay

A miles of mostly undeveloped shoreline… You could easily imagine yourself here as Robinson Crusoe in his island isolation.

Proizd island possesses all the elements of a vision of paradise.
Gleaming white pebble beaches opening up to stunning azure warm waters and white limestone cliffs, through which the elements have carved vast natural coves.

"Treći bili bok" has a large seclude pebble beach allowing nude sunbathing throughout the cove.

The pure unrestrained hedonism of Proizd is an experience not to be missed - an attraction on which Vela Luka has built its international reputation!

Pičena Cove
The small beach is enclosed by alpine trees, sheltered and hidden by a rocky promontory extending into the bay. The beach is only accessible on foot or by boat, so it's rarely crowded.

Gradina
Among many of coves that are situated in the bay of Vela Luka we would like to point out the spacious and pleasant bay of Gradina. It is situated in the north of the gulf, not far from the town, and to it leads a 4km long asphalt road. In that bay there are several approachable pebble beaches suitable for swimming.

Proizd Island

Proizd, a small island only a half hours’ boat ride from the town centre, is definitely the pearl of the area of Vela Luka, for the whiteness of its beaches, the turquoise sea and the scent of salty freshness leaves nobody indifferent!

There is a small restaurant called «Proizd» right next to a small dock, offering local specialties, international cuisine and refreshing drinks and cocktails, all in a pleasant Mediterranean atmosphere.

«Bili Boci» are the three most beautiful beaches near Vela Luka, and are located on the northern side of the island. There are several walking paths leading to them.

From here stretches a beautiful view of the island of Hvar and the open sea. This is where it all comes together - the power of the sea, the sun and nature and here is where the beauty of spending a holiday in Vela Luka becomes complete!

The untouched nature and beauty are a feast to the sense and the safest sanctuary from everyday urban living.

Nature abundantly bestowed upon it its most precious gifts: crystal clear sea, sparkling white pebbles and air rich in the soothing fragrance of Mediterranean vegetation.

Numerous tourists from all parts of Europe stayed faithful to Vela Luka for years and they always return here drawn by this island’s magical beauty.

Find out why !

Osjak islet

The island of Ošjak is characterized by peace, tranquillity and simplicity so it is no wonder that its visitors have been calling it Love Island for decades.

That is so true, because once you come here it is so easy to forget the everyday rhythm of the hectic city life, and its untouched nature, aromas of the Mediterranean, crystal-clear sea, sunshine and heat always remind the visitor of the beauty of existence and the wonder of nature!

There is a walking path leading through a dense pinewood covering the entire island, so you can walk to easily accessible rocks and places where you can sunbathe, swim in the sea and relax.

On the western side of the island, right next to the walking path, there is an interesting cave surrounded with rocks and the sea, making a beautiful sight of a unique natural beauty.

Here you will find no traces of city life. There is nothing here except the sea, pinewood and crickets, and all those who like the untouched beauty of nature will discover the Mediterranean as it once was and find, even if only for a little while, "their place in the sun"! Ošjak is only a ten-minute boat ride from the Vela Luka town centre.

In that bay there are several approachable pebble beaches suitable for swimming. From the southeast and south it is protected by the small islands of Gubesa and St.John, and that fore it is a safe shelter for navigators of small boats and yachts.

On top of the small island St. John there is the church of St. John, a one-fold building with a bell-tower on distaff in the middle of the front and a gothic arch in the interior. It was already mentioned in documents from the 15th century and upon oral tradition and remains of the destroyed walls, it is supposed that on this place there was a Benediction monastery with a church.

There are numerous private houses and apartments built in the bay of Gradina today, a due to its approachability and beauty it is one of the most popular sites for swimming for inhabitants and tourists.

Poplat Cove

You can reach the Poplat bay by a road that leads thought the southern part of the Vela Luka bay. The Road leads above the bays and beside the small island of Osjak, through olive groves and dense pine tree woods. There are several weekend houses built in the bay of Poplat that are at disposal for rent. The sculptor Ante Marinovic, born in Vela Luka, has his weekend house there, too.

His merit is the collecting of Donated International Collection of Drawings, Graphic and Sculptures. There is also the small church of the Maid of Carmen built in the bay, and it is situated along a fertile field of vineyards and olive groves. It is surrounded by dense greenery of high cypresses. It was built as a family chapel so that the inherit ants take care of it up-to-day. Frano Petkovic Kovac and his sons Ivan and Antun built this church in 1888 on their land. The chapel was built in a modest combination of gothic and domestic way of building of ancient island churches.

With its greatness, and especially height it points out among similar buildings from that time in that area. It is built of stone, but it is plastered inside and outside. The simple church façade is decorated on the corners with a little bit pointed out half-columns, there is a stone frame on the entrance, a sloping-prophylactic cornice above the entrance, a small belfry on distaff with one bell, and on the side walls there is on each side a tight, tall neo-gothic window. The altar-table is loped off in stone and decorated with parts of reddish marble.

Rick Griffiths

Good day Staff at Mediterano,
You have so many folk come and go that I assume you no longer can remember who's who but nevertheless this is Rick Griffiths, an american, married to a belgian and with two teenage daughters all with blond hair.  We rented the small house last year in beginning of July from the fellow who's father was not well.  I always wanted to respond but just didn't get around to it.  We drank our last wine from you all last week.
sorry it's so late but if you can still use another testimonial I'd add the following:
"The little house we rented the other side of the mountain from Vela Luka was absolutely perfect.  Very quiet but not totally alone. Super close to the water with incredible views looking out the bay from the large patio balcony.  Everything we needed was provided and the patio bbq was well used.  We'll remember this vacation for a long time.  The service was also excellent, being taken care of as if we were part of their family.  Thanks for a wonderful vacation Mediterano!"  Rick & Hilde Griffiths-Vanmelle, belgian american

Hopefully we can repeat that summer a few years from now.  God Bless!
